Official NZAS Tournament Rules

  1. Appropriate safety equipment must be worn by both combatants.
  2. Appropriate safety equipment is considered to be a minimum of:

    a helmet
    a throat protector
    gloves

    All of which are able to withstand full tour de bras and l'estocq without transmitting injury to the wearer.

  3. Officially sanctioned weapons must have:

    a fined grained wooden shaft capable of withstanding reapeated blows
    foam thrusting tips at each end that do not deflect significantly to either side
    a foam mail and a foam bec de faucon
    foam running along potential striking zones either side of the croix for at least 15cm
    the croix may be stiffened, but only in such manners that prevent the stiffening from penetrating the foam and injuring a combatant

  4. A marshal must be appointed to control the bout. The marshal should be somebody of experience in pollaxe combat.
  5. Official sanction of a weapon to be used in a bout is at the discretion of the marshal
  6. The marshal can stop the bout at any time, for any reason, by calling "Hold". All combats within earshot must immediately halt, and may only continue at the discretion of the marshal who called "Hold".
  7. Any danger to any person is grounds for a called "Hold".
  8. Combatants will be restricted to an area of an agreed size, marked out by some means. Should any combatant move out of this area, a "Hold" should be called
  9. Points are scored as follows:

    landing 10 blows first: 5 points
    throwing or pushing opponent from list: 10 points
    throwing opponent to ground: 7 points
    opponent concedes: 0 points
    face thrust: 2 points
    blow to the head: 2 points
    blow to the hand: 1 points
    blow or thrust to the foot: 1 points

  10. The bout continues until:
    a) one combatant lands 5 scoring blows
    b) one combatant is thrown to the ground or out of the list
    c) one combatant concedes
